How are adoptive parents matched with a child?

If you are thinking about adopting a child, it is important to understand that you cannot simply choose a child and begin the process. The state of Iowa takes child adoption very seriously. It wants to ensure that each child is matched with a family that will provide him or her with love and care and that the child will be a good fit for the family. The idea is to make sure the child finds a real family he or she can become a part of.

In the state, matching children to families is done by Four Oaks Foster and Adoptive Family Connections. Working with the Department of Human Services, Four Oaks conducts a screening of your family to begin the adoption and matching process. It will look at all the details of your family to see what you are like and to get a good idea of your overall dynamics. You are entered into a database that will help to match you with a child who would fit nicely into your family. Ideally, the child you get matched with will naturally become a part of your family and fit in like a missing puzzle piece.

Great care is taken to match children with families because these kids have often been through a lot up to this point in their lives. They need stability and a good home where they can finally be a kid and feel safe. Once a child is placed with you, there will be follow up visits to ensure everything is working out. This information is only intended to educate and should not be interpreted as legal advice.
