What are the home requirements for my home if I adopt?

Giving a child a loving and safe home through adoption is an amazing thing to do. Adopting does require quite a bit of work and time. When you take in a child in Iowa, there are certain requirements you must meet. One of them is ensuring your home is ready for a child. There are guidelines used in the foster system that apply if you are adopting from this system, which are explained by Four Oaks.

First, it is important to understand that your home does not need to be perfect. You do not need to be rich or live in a million dollar home to be approved to adopt. You do not even have to own your own home. Renting is fine. The main requirement is you provide a safe place for the child to live.

By safe, the state means, in part, that you must provide the child with a proper bedroom. This is a room that is designed to be a bedroom and has an operating window, door and permanent walls. It must also contain somewhere to put clothing, such as a dresser or closet and a bed. It needs to be at least 40 square feet to house one child. For each additional child, an additional 40 feet is required. If the room is in the basement, it has to have a direct exit to the outside and one to the inside of the home.

You also need ensure some other basic safety measures are in place. These include having a working fire extinguisher in the home, working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors on each floor, specifically where the bedrooms are located, and proper storage for guns, ammunition, medications and other harmful substances.
